The great volume of water that rushed down the side of the mountain created an amazing sound. The loud rushing roar drew our attention toward one of God’s impressive creations, the waterfall. I stood at the bottom straining my neck to look up and see the source of it. Though I could not see it, I could imagine it must have been an enormous body of water that fed such a non-stop gush of water.
The source of life is likewise out of my sights and the shear magnitude of his power and holiness are immeasurable. Though we can not see the source of God’s power and holiness, we can come to understand these qualities of God through his creation.
”For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.” Romans 1:20
God continues to reveal himself to us. Through his word we come to know him, but through his creation we come to understand him. Have you ever stood before one of God’s magnificent creations; a waterfall, a mountain, or a canyon or beheld the beauty of an early morning sunrise or the vastness of a starlit sky, and been overwhelmed with an indescribable sense of God’s being?
"But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? Job 12:7-9
It only takes one night of stargazing to realize that God is truly too magnificent for us to fully know or understand. And yet, staring up into a starlit sky populated with an uncountable number of lights that trail off into the outer most reaches of space, God reveals a glimpse of himself to us. And his word confirms that he is revealing himself to us through what he has made. Why is he revealing his mystery to us?
Through his apostle Paul God’s word tells us, “My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ (Colossians 2:2),” It is not all about the pretty flowers and waterfalls, God has a purpose in revealing himself to us. He has such a pressing purpose that he sent his son to earth to show us the way. “Beyond all question, the mystery of godliness is great: He appeared in a body, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory (1 Timothy 3:16).”
God reveals himself to us so that we may be without excuse. It is the great mystery of God being revealed, his eternal power and divine nature, as well as, what we would like to overlook, his great and impending wrath. The wrath will come to overcome godlessness and wickedness and to purify the world for eternity in Him.
“The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. (Romans 1:18-20)
Standing before the great icons of creation reveals to us the great mysteries of God; the beauty of a magnificent mountain, the tranquility of a tropical island, or the serenity of a Kansas wheat field. That same mystery is revealed when the mountains shake off an avalanche or spew out molten lava; an earthquake brings man made masterpieces to the ground; or a tornado levels an entire town. When all that the world can see is destruction in these "natural disasters," those who have received understanding through Christ will know God’s peace is with them always. "And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7).”
